A tabletop RPG built around what your character actually does.

Deep medieval-fantasy play. Free preview. No books to buy.

Build any character your setting allows. Get better at the things you actually do, not at the things the level chart says you should. Register for a free account to preview the system, then subscribe when you're ready for the full game.

The free account is genuinely free — no credit card, no auto-billing. Subscribe later only if you decide it's worth it. We never share or sell your information, and we'll delete your account completely on request.

Imagine playing a game where you can…

  • Cast a frost spell while wearing full plate armor — without anyone telling you that's not allowed.
  • Dual-wield a war-hammer and a dagger, or a torch and a holy symbol, or whatever the moment calls for.
  • Play a centaur blacksmith who specializes in social manipulation, and have all of those things make sense together.
  • Build a brand-new race, heritage, or profession in an afternoon — and use it that same session.
  • Get better at a skill by actually using it, not by waiting for an arbitrary level-up to unlock it.
  • Land hits that have real, cinematic effects — not just "you take 7 damage."
  • Run a sword-and-sorcery campaign one week and a Bronze-Age tribal saga the next, with the same rules.
  • Stop apologizing to your group when somebody wants to do something the rulebook never thought of.

How is this different from the game you play now?

What you might be used to

  • Buy a $50 player's guide. Then a $50 monster manual. Then the $50 expansion.
  • Pick a class from a list. Pick a subclass from a list. Wait for level 5.
  • "You can't cast that, you're wearing armor."
  • Skill trees that gate things you should already be able to try.
  • Hundreds of pages of rules and you still need a chart for grappling.

What you get here

  • One subscription unlocks the entire game. Always online, always updated, no $50 hardcover habit.
  • Build a class on the fly, or use one of dozens of premade ones. Either way, no hidden gates.
  • If your character could plausibly try it, the system lets them try it.
  • Skills get better when you actually use them. That is the whole advancement system.
  • One unified resolution roll. No charts. No flowcharts.

Built for medieval fantasy. Built deep.

Bitter Watches of the Night currently focuses on the eras most tabletop players already love — primitive tribes, Bronze-Age cultures, sword-and-sorcery, and the wider medieval-fantasy palette. The rules go deep where you actually need them: combat, magic, character growth, and the dozens of small decisions that make a session feel real. The system is structured so that other genres can be added cleanly later, but right now this is where it shines, and it's where every rule, every spell, and every creature has been built and tested.
